A beautiful sunrise from our hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara game park in Kenya, along with a little history of the hot air balloon. This photo was entered in the PhotoFriday challenge for Divine, since there is nothing quite as majestic or celestial as the sun rising over an endless landscape. I also entered this photo in Lensday challenge for Technology because the hot air balloon has allowed people to float above the trees and expand their views and perspectives of the world... after all, isn't that what technology should be used for? The first hot air balloon launch took place on September 19, 1783, carrying a sheep, a duck, and a rooster (they all survived the ordeal). This took place after two brothers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier discovered that hot air was lighter than cold air, and used a small silk balloon for their initial demonstration. The first recorded manned flight in a hot air balloon took place in Paris, built from paper and silk. This balloon was piloted on a 22 minute flight that ascended 500 feet, traveling from the center of Paris to vineyards nearby.
