The African elephant is the largest living land mammal at up to 12 feet high and as much as 12,000 pounds (6 tons). They spend about 16 hours a day foraging for nearly 350 pounds of food. Elephants are extremely social, though we saw this youngster grabbing a solo bite to eat after we left the Mara River.
